In only its second year, Backgammon at The Grand in Scarborough attracted a full field of 32 players, with some players experiencing their first taste of tournament backgammon in the Novices flight.

A number of players arrived on the Friday night to play Ca$h Out Backgammon, whilst an eventual winner was honing his skills on a ‘Side-by-Side’ board.
The weather was kind to the players making long journeys to the east coast and on the stroke of 10:30 on the Saturday morning play commenced in the magnificent Palm Court ballroom.
The first trophies were presented early on Saturday evening for the Novices Flight. This proved to be a clean sweep for the East Coast Backgammon Club with Stuart Whittingham being triumphant.
After a long day qualifying on the Saturday, Sunday had an early start to the final four groups.
The Gold winner was Mark Calderbank.
The very last match of the weekend was the final match of the Bronze section. The match went to double match point with Shaun Goode winning. It should be noted that Richard Neale who came runner up joined a group of two-time lighthouse winners. Rob Perry is the only other member of this elite club.
