NEBA club nights came to an abrupt end in March this year but John Horton (aka Tigereye) was not going to take it lying down. After consulting with NEBA and UK Team Captain Martin Barkwill, John recruited me as his assistant and took on the task of keeping the club together through online tournaments.
Many thanks to everyone who voted in this year’s Awards – a record 137 votes were received and the results themselves were first announced at the AGM. Sadly with no face to face play we can’t have our usual presentation, but the winners – and we certainly have a deserving set – will be getting framed certificates in the near future one way or another.
As you will probably know, the Government has issued new Covid-19 measures which came into effect yesterday (14 September). The measures, under which social gatherings of more than six people will be illegal in England, can be found here and here. Similar measures apply in the other countries of the UK. Our understanding is that the measures will be enforceable in law. In particular, we note:
The 7th UK Backgammon Open was held online this year over the three days of the late August bank holiday weekend. It was a true celebration of backgammon not only for the UK but, with a record 22 nationalities taking part (24 if you include Scotland and Wales), also for the world of backgammon. We had a total of 181 players of which 155 were UKBGF Members competing for: two $995 P40 boards; a €500 entry package to a top European tour event; a £500 Geoffrey Parker Professional roll-up travel board; hotel and registration at next year’s UK Open Masters; hotel and entry at next year’s London Open Intermediates; commented match and lessons from Backgammon Workshop; and high street store vouchers.
With these prizes on offer for a total outlay of either £15 or £10, it’s not surprising that we attracted 113 players in the Masters flight and 78 in the Intermediates. We had deliberately kept the cost of entry low to encourage as many players as possible to take part.

Earlier in the year COVID intervened to prevent us holding our physical Clubs Championship… but there was such a strong reaction to the thought of us missing it out for a year that we leaped into the unknown and assembled an Online Clubs Championship at relatively short notice.
