There will be elections for the UKBGF Board 2019-2020 coming up soon, and this year’s elections will differ from past ones…

A Rules Situation Update
Some time back, the UKBGF Rules sub-committee spent quite a lot of time reviewing and considering the Rules amendment suggestions it had received since the currently existing Rules version was finalised. Six clarification amendments were agreed upon and were due to be considered further by the EUBGF for further implementation across all member nation federations.
Since that time however, further discussions began to take place and are currently ongoing with more federations outside Europe, most notably the USBGF, with the aim of achieving a unified globally accepted set of Rules.
Simultaneously, the EUBGF has started off the process of evolving into the World Backgammon Federation (WBGF) in order to, amongst other things, unify the game of backgammon generally.
In light of these developments, the implementation of a further set of amendments at this time isn’t felt to be helpful in achieving the global aims.
Having said the above, the clarification amendments previously agreed upon by the UKBGF Rules sub-committee will not be discarded but will be put forward once the global position becomes clearer and in fact will be supplemented by further suggestions that have been received directly by the UKBGF/EUBGF/WBGF in the interim.
We will keep you further informed about the global developments at this very exciting time for backgammon at the international level.
For the avoidance of doubt, please note that the WBGF is a different organisation to the WBF.
The UKBGF AGM 2018
The UKBGF will be holding its second Annual General Meeting at 5pm on Friday 31st August, at Coombe Abbey – that is, prior to the dinner with Akiko Yazawa, and the Warm Up event at the UK Open. The meeting should be finished in plenty of time for players who want to take part in the Warm Up. This is an opportunity to the Board to report directly to members and for members to put motions and questions to the board in a formal setting. We hope that members will take the opportunity to join us.
Last year’s meeting was well attended and some interesting discussions took place; this year there will be elections for the next Board coming up and if you’re thinking of standing for election and want to find out more about how the Board work before making a decision, it would definitely be a good idea to come along.
Motions to be put at the meeting need to be sent to the Chair, julia@ukbgf.com by 12th August 2018 so that they can be distributed to members in advance. Detailed questions can be sent in beforehand, also to the Chair and by the same date, to give time for an answer to be prepared; we will do our best to handle questions on the day as well.

Book review: Opening Concepts
In the Members’ Area tonight – we’ve written a review of “Opening Concepts” by Michihito (“Michy”) Kageyama and Roland Herrera.
We’re hoping to review more books in the coming months, so do keep an eye out. I have plenty on my bookshelves (my long-suffering family will certainly vouch for that!) but if you’d like us to review a particular title, do get in touch…
Yan Kit Chan is the inaugural Cambridge Open champion
In late 1985, my first week in Cambridge, I played my first game of backgammon over a physical board, and started spending evenings playing long sessions fuelled by Southern Comfort and lemonade. Even though I ended up organising the university club and running termly tournaments – and eventually winning the Michaelmas Tankard – I never imagined that many years later, I’d be inviting the UK’s top players back to where it all began for me. This weekend, 62 players descended on the University Centre to fight it out for the first Cambridge Open title.
